Whilst we appreciate that you have your own tried and tested interview techniques, our clients at Arrow Executive Search have found some of the Targeted Selection and Competency Based questions below to be useful additions to their usual regime of questions.

Whilst no candidate is perfect (as is no boss or company), we trust that this will assist you in selecting the best team member so that they can truly make a difference to you and to your company. Enjoy :)


  • Begin your questions with 'Tell me about' or 'How'
  • Do ask for contrasts and comparisons. Example: Please compare your functions at your last firm with those at another company where you held a similar position.

Problems solving, organizational and contributive
  • Describe a particular time on your last job when your plans helped you achieve a challenging goal?
  • Could you list the job-related aspects that you enjoy the most?
  • Tell me about a time when you set a realistic, challenging work goal. What did you do and what was the result?
  • Describe a situation when you had to persist in order to reach a goal, i.t.o. the planning, action you took and the end result?
  • How have your responsibilities changed since you started your current position?
  • What kind of customer service improvements were you involved with at your last company?
  • Could you describe a situation recently where you received positive feedback from a colleague or friend that made you feel well liked?
  • What work situation have you been involved in recently where you have been complimented on your professionalism?
  • Tell me about a time when you were confronted by a problem that seemed to demand your manager's input and he/she was not available?
  • How do you maintain accuracy when you are frequently interrupted?
  • What is your procedure for meeting deadlines?
  • What timesaving ideas work for you? How did you discover them?
Relationship management
  • Giving respect is sometimes a real challenge. When did you find it difficult to give respect to a person in a higher position, what did you do and how did this affect the future relationship?
  • Compromise is often called for within team decisions, give me an example of when you had to compromise and why?
  • Tell me about a time when you were expecting advancement and did not receive it. How did you handle the disappointment and possibly overcome it?
  • Give me an example of a time when you had to be assertive?
  • Describe a situation in which you were in conflict with a client? How did you handle the situation and possibly overcome it?
  • Describe what you believe the benefits of teamwork are?
  • Being a sub-ordinate and often not being involved in management decisions; give me an example of a situation in which you disagreed with management and how did you handle it?
  • Describe a situation in which you were in conflict with a colleague? How did you handle the situation and possibly overcome it?
  • When has your management of a group of people lead to success through planning and implementation?
  • In attempting to win over a difficult client, at what point do you draw the line and seek the intervention of a supervisor?
  • What difficulties have you encountered that were caused by poor communication on your part, or on the part of others?
  • Describe a project you worked on as a member of a team in your last job. What was your contribution? What did you do to make that team more successful?
  • Do you prefer working as an individual or within a team and why?
  • Tell me about a negative experience at work which you converted to new learning?
  • Could you give me an example of a time when you questioned a process, technique or system used by your company that you did not believe in?

  • When did you use your knowledge of accounting to solve an intricate problem?
  • What specific things did you do to earn the right to motivate to close the account of a customer?
